Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia (FM or FMS) is a chronic medical disorder that evolves slowly over time and often occurs for no apparent reason.
Patients suffer a variety of symptoms. Not all patients have the same symptoms (or display all symptoms) but these can include: widespread chronic pain; hypersensitivity to physical pressure on their body; leg cramps; joint stiffness; connective tissue pain; sleep disturbances; general fatigue; numbness, and tingling.

In addition, fibromyalgia sufferers are frequently also affected by psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) disorder.

Not surprisingly, patients who suffer from fibromyalgia seldom feel healthy.

Fibromyalgia affects between 2% and 4% of the population. Interestingly, female patients outnumber male patients by a ratio of 9 to 1. Dr. Richard Tavares—Dr. Rick the Chiropractor—can help alleviate the pain suffered from fibromyalgia patients with soft tissue therapy and gentle manipulation.

A 1985 study asked 81 fibromyalgia patients to indicate drug or alternative treatments that best relieved their pain. Chiropractic care scored high in this study. Another study examined the effectiveness of chiropractic care in relieving fibromyalgia symptoms. After just 15 treatments, fibromyalgia patients suffered from less pain and fatigue, and actually enjoyed better sleep.
